Introducing the only source for professional quality natural Phragmites Australis
Artists' Drawing Pens.
These pens are individually crafted to give extra flexibility for an expressive line.
One of the earliest tools for expression, the reed pen
captures in its simplicity and elegance something of true authenticity.
From Homer and Pliny to Rembrandt and Van Gogh,,
the Reed Pen is indeed a most timeless creation.

As you can see the pens all have a node behind the nib which is a basic design element of my reed pens. The node functions as a grip and helps create balance. Pens that are made without a node, i.e., a clean length of the cane, in my opinion, are awkward to hold.

Phragmites pens are more delicate than Bamboo, so aggressive use of a new pen may result in a broken tip. Best to ease the pens into use. Rinse the pens in water after use but do not over clean. Over time, the ink seasons the pen and makes it harder.

Fixing a broken tip is easily achieved by cutting a new tip. A YouTube video of making Reed pens is here:

Pen length averages 6-10" and reflects the inclination of the cane and how interesting the patina is. After sealing, the coloration of the phragmites intensifies and resembles lacquered tortoiseshell.

The natural flexibility of Phragmites makes it ideal for the expressive line. Although Bamboo and Arundo donax is more durable, Phragmites has a greater response and range of line width.
